When learning CNC technology, start with the basics. So, what exactly is CNC technology? It seems to be a technology that uses computers to control machine tools for part processing. I’ve heard of CNC machine tools before, but how do they actually work? It might involve programming, machining, and automation.

The full name of CNC technology is digital control technology, which uses digital signals to control machine tool movements. What’s the difference between traditional and CNC machine tools? Traditional ones require manual operation of handles and parameter adjustments, while CNC machines are controlled by pre - written programs. This results in higher precision and efficiency, making them suitable for mass - producing complex parts.

What components make up a CNC system? It includes a computer, controller, servo system, and sensors. The computer processes the program, the controller converts it into electrical signals, the servo system drives the motor, and sensors provide position feedback, forming a closed - loop control system for precise machine tool movement.

For programming, CNC uses G - code, an instruction set that tells the machine tool how to move the cutting tool, such as linear and circular interpolation, and controls spindle and feed speed. When programming, consider the cutting path, parameters, and tool selection. CAM software can also automatically generate G - code from 3D models.

Manually writing G - code can be error - prone, especially for complex parts requiring lots of calculations. CAM software is helpful here as it auto - generates code and reduces errors. However, understanding G - code structure is crucial, like knowing that G00 is rapid movement, G01 linear interpolation, G02/G03 circular interpolation, M03 spindle clockwise rotation, and M05 spindle stop.

Common CNC machine tools differ in the number of axes, such as three - axis (X, Y, Z), four - axis (adding a rotary axis like A or B), and five - axis machines (with two rotary axes), suitable for making simple to highly complex parts like those in aerospace.

Major components of CNC machine tools include the bed, spindle, feed system, tool magazine, and worktable. The spindle rotates the tool, the feed system controls workpiece/tool movement, the tool magazine enables automatic tool changes for efficiency, and the worktable, equipped with various fixtures, holds the workpiece in place.
